Hyperbaric oxygen therapy

What HBOT actually is.

A calm, controlled session that gives your body the conditions it needs to recover. Here is what it involves, and how it feels.

What it is

Oxygen, pressure, time.

HBOT stands for hyperbaric oxygen therapy. You lie comfortably inside a pressurised chamber while the pressure is increased and more oxygen becomes available to breathe.

At Hope House, a session is typically 60 minutes at 1.5 ATA as appropriate for the individual. You are not left to work it out alone: suitability is assessed before participation, and the team talks you through the session.

It is a quiet, structured hour. The aim here is to give you a clear understanding of the experience, not to promise what you will notice afterwards.

What a session feels like

Nothing to prove.

Will it feel claustrophobic?

The chamber is clear and you are not sealed in. You can see out, and you are looked after throughout.

What do I do for the hour?

Rest, read, listen to something, breathe, and switch off. It is fine to let the hour be quiet.

Will it hurt?

It should not be painful. You may notice pressure in your ears as the pressure changes, similar to a flight, and you will be guided through it.

What should I wear?

Arrive dressed for your session, or bring a set of clothes to change into. Before you arrive:

  • Cotton or natural fibres only.
  • Arrive clean, with dry hair.
  • No perfumes.
  • No electronic devices; leave metal at home too.

Can I stop?

Yes. You can ask to stop at any time. Tell the team how you are feeling and we will respond.

How long until you notice anything?

There is no set answer.

Some people report feeling more rested or clearer after their first few sessions. Others notice nothing until they have built a block of sessions. Responses vary.

You cannot predict how any individual will respond. There are no guaranteed outcomes or performance promises here; the useful first step is an honest conversation about suitability and what you are hoping to understand.

How sessions fit together

Is it right for you?

Suitability comes first.

HBOT is not suitable for everyone, and there are contraindications. Suitability is assessed before any session, and medical clearance may be requested.

Wellness and recovery support only, not a substitute for medical advice, diagnosis or treatment; we do not diagnose, treat, cure or prevent disease; suitability screening applies; individual results vary and no outcome is guaranteed.
